1. you could easily program a drone (the mechanical one, not the insect!) to avoid certain stimuli as though these were painful. (Some already treat recharging stations as "pleasurable")
2. bacteria and protists also have much of this behaviour but there's no reason to think they are sentient.
3. If inverts were aware, statistically, you and I would have been born as inverts.
I suggest that consciousness, intelligence and awareness are independent attributes and you can have two without the third.
